Empowering Women Through Creativity and Craftsmanship in Calabria

An innovative Fab Lab brings together women from diverse backgrounds to learn, conceptualise and craft sustainable fashion and design pieces, empowering them to build new lives.

In Cosenza, Calabria, a transformational initiative is weaving a brighter future for women. FuoriPosto—literally meaning “out-of-place”—is a sustainable tailoring and creative project that offers a supportive space for women to learn, collaborate, and unlock opportunities for personal and professional growth. It’s an environment where women from various backgrounds are rediscovering their creative talents and re-entering the workforce through sustainable practices.

Roberta Attanasio, president of the Centro Antiviolenza “Roberta Lanzino”, explains that “the initiative allows women to learn, express their creativity, and share their aspirations while fostering sustainability.” The project also provides the chance to create innovative and original lines of fashion and design. “This space encourages women to explore their potential, rediscover their passion for craftsmanship, and develop unique creations,” Attanasio adds.

A Collective Effort for Change

FuoriPosto is part of a broader movement to create social change and provide opportunities for women to engage in community-driven projects. The project is funded through the “Realizziamo il cambiamento con il Sud” initiative with support from Fondazione Realizza il Cambiamento, Fondazione Con il Sud, and ActionAid International Italia E.T.S., alongside four key local associations. The local organisations supporting FuoriPosto are:

  • Ri-ForMap: Facilitates creative workshops and supports cultural and artistic events.
  • Sostenia: Provides psychological support and training in digital skills and sustainability.
  • Goodwill: Guides women in translating their passions into entrepreneurial ventures.
  • 2ND CHANCE: Helps participants develop design skills and access materials for sustainable fashion projects.

All of these organisations are united by a shared mission to foster creativity, collaboration and social renewal. They empower women by helping them to transform their creative talents into valuable skills, paving the way for personal growth and employment opportunities.

Empowering Women for a Sustainable Future

The project is already attracting women from Cosenza and surrounding areas, and including individuals from different cultural backgrounds. According to Eurostat data, Cosenza has a significant gender employment gap, making this initiative crucial for the local community. By tackling employment barriers, the program helps women to build confidence and develop essential skills for participating in the workforce.

The program includes:

  • Practical and theoretical courses in design, tailoring, and craftsmanship.
  • Digital literacy and web communication courses to support career readiness.
  • Circular economy and sustainability courses to promote well-being and social inclusion.
  • Access to professional equipment, such as sewing machines and sewing kits.
  • Opportunities to work with recycled materials and create sustainable designs.
  • A collaborative environment to foster community-building.

Participants also receive individual and group counseling from a psychologist. These sessions are designed to foster personal growth and autonomy, with activities focused on supporting self-realization. Additionally, support staff assist participants in exploring career options and gaining insights into entering or reentering the workforce.

A Network for Social Impact

The project aims to become part of the La Comunità delle Sartorie Sociali di Periferia, a national network of social tailoring initiatives. This affiliation will provide access to free materials, a virtual marketplace for showcasing their creations, and collaborative training opportunities with other cooperatives. Through this network, women can enhance their skills, build industry connections, and actively contribute to Italy’s growing movement of socially responsible fashion.

A Pathway to Personal and Professional Renewal

FuoriPosto is more than just a creative space—it is a model of empowerment, inclusivity, and sustainability. In Cosenza, women now have a chance to reintegrate into society and the workforce while contributing to a more sustainable future.

As the first creations near completion, excitement grows over the possibilities that have opened up for the participants. The journey is just beginning, yet the project is already transforming lives for the better. This project exemplifies how creativity, sustainability, and empowerment can converge to drive meaningful social change, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of women in Calabria.

Contributions are welcome from those who wish to support the project and want to play a part in creating a future where women’s dreams, talents, and passions find their place. For more information or to support the initiative, visit Centro Antiviolenza Lanzino.
